Under the hood was a different story however. In the beginning Pontiac built their own power plants, and the first Firebirds never had anything other than a Pontiac motor. The large 400 cubic inch big block V-8, borrowed from Pontiac’s GTO, was available as a Firebird option right from the start, rated at 325 hp.
By 1970 the Firebird 400 had morphed into the Firebird Formula 400, packing a 330 hp four-barrel carb model of the 400 ci V-8 under its singular dual scoop hood. Most customers opted for either the four speed manual or four speed automatic transmission to be mated to the big block V-8, rather than the standard three speed. The four speed manual tranny was especially good at putting power to the road for this muscle oriented version of the Firebird.
As with the rest of the muscle car family, the Firebird 400 fell victim to emission control requirements starting in 1971, derating its big block engine. Then came the gas embargo of 1973 that made mileage more important than horsepower. By 1976, the Firebird 400 was done. The big 400 V-8 was offered only in a largely de-rated version for the Trans Am model of the Firebird.
Although the Firebird 400 is gone, it’s still a head-turner whenever muscle car fans gather with their cars.
